Waldo Burton Memorial Home

The Waldo Burton Memorial Home was a boy's home operated by the Society for the Relief of Destitute Orphan Boys (a Presbyterian organization dating to 1824). The building itself was built and donated by Mr. and Mrs. William Lafayette Burton in 1921 and named after their son, who died in 1914. Burton had earned his fortune in the cypress lumbering industry. Boys ranging in age from six to sixteen resided in the home when it first opened.

The Society for the Relief of Destitute Boys only served white, Protestant orphans in the 1800s. The sponsoring organization operated various homes across the city before settling into its Carrollton location. Following the modern civil rights movement, the institution integrated. The facility remains in use as a residential facility for boys.
