Archaeology in Orleans Parish really got its start in New Orleans East, as drainage and development projects in the first decades of the twentieth century began to reveal traces of human occupation going back over two thousand years. The excavations pictured here appear to be from the 1939 joint LSU-WPA project at the nearby Little Woods sites, shell midden sites like the Oak Island ones.
